STORY: This renovation and furnishing design project began as a master suite redesign, and continued to grow in scope gradually until its ultimate completion 4 years later. The home is a grand example of the iconic architecture of Bo MacEwen in The Oaks, built around 1990 on one of the community’s best waterfront homesites.

The first room one sees upon entering the home is the living room, with sweeping views across the waterway and out to Casey Key, with hardly another home in sight. Our design goal for the living room was to make a spectacular first impression befitting the home’s classical architecture, and of course that incredible view. The foundation of the room we were fortunate to build upon includes its original wood floors and architectural details such as wainscoting, dentil crown molding, and large Palladian windows. However the ceiling was flat and plain, its only detail square A/C vents. At the request of our client we designed a brand new living room ceiling, raised in the center and detailed with all-white moldings and carvings inspired by the home’s neoclassical roots. With the furnishings and drapes we chose to echo the strong symmetry that is such a part of the architectural character of the room, so the result is a living room that just feels like it belongs to this house.

In the dining room, our goal was to walk the line between formal and relaxed/nature-inspired, seen for example in the mixture of mahogany and linen finishes. We removed shutters from the windows to allow in the waterfront view and opted for soft custom-designed shades instead, with a hidden solar shade behind that can be lowered as needed.

The design concept for the master bedroom was more formal than the home’s other bedrooms, though we kept it feeling light and fresh with a soft, natural color palette. We retained the existing wood floors, white wainscot and trim, and gorgeous mahogany doors. Luxurious silk wall covering was applied to both walls and ceilings. A basic tray ceiling was given new life with new wood detailing, and a bit of the unexpected with plush velvet upholstery and a hand painted dome. The effect is so cocoon-like acoustically soft, you can feel and hear a hushed calm as soon as you enter the room. The window treatment fabrics are of bamboo and silk and the chandelier is artisan blown glass.

The home has several other guest bedrooms, each to which we brought a different feel while keeping to a soft color palette and transitional style. The largest guest bedroom is the most formal after the master, and the smallest was a fun room for us to get a little more casual and eclectic. We define the overall character and style of the home as "fresh classic," the Angela Rodriguez Interiors approach to traditional design, done with a light and fresh feel.
