PROJECT TYPE: Renovation

LOCALE: St. Armand's Key, Sarasota, FL

SIZE: 2,700 sq ft

AWARDED: First place, Kitchen Design Competition, Sarasota Magazine

STORY: This new kitchen was the heart of a larger renovation of this canal-front home on St. Armand’s Key. To realize the kitchen of the homeowners’ dreams, that meant a full, down-to-the-studs renovation and a truly dramatic transformation.

To create an inspiring and functional environment for these homeowners who are passionate about cooking, we designed a new custom kitchen, expanding its size and demolishing an existing wall to join the kitchen and living spaces. A unique floor plan was devised address our clients’ many functional goals within a limited space, creating a distinct work zone and entertaining zone.

The design features double islands: one center island with a large quartz surface for food preparation, and one sleek entertaining island at bar height which transforms into a peninsula when a hidden countertop extension is opened, connecting it to the perimeter cabinetry for a lengthened serving and entertaining surface. This bar-height surface steps down with a waterfall of quartz to enclose a wine fridge at one end. Storage was maximized with an efficient cabinetry design featuring hidden organizers and a corner pantry.

A light, natural finish palette connects the kitchen to the outdoor environment, its views enhanced by new, enlarged windows. A tall soffit feature over the upper cabinetry fully extends to the 11 foot ceiling, faced in the same White Oak planks as the floor to dramatic effect. The countertops are quartz slab and the custom cabinetry is stained and painted Maple, in two contrasting finishes. Lighting is energy-efficient LED controlled and dimmable by switch or via the owners’ iPhone. As a final personal touch, an extra-deep toekick overhang at the center island provides a perfect place to tuck in the food bowls of the owners’ two dogs.
